A recent Bergen Record article begins: “Thanks to rising prices, a difficult economy and a robust secondary ticket market online, Yankees postseason tickets are not hard to find this year.” The secondary market is a big factor in why the average fan may be able to watch Game 1 of the Yankees playoffs live.

The article continues: “Stubhub and other ticket resellers are offering seats all over the stadium at face value or slightly above or below those figures. Virtually any seat can be had for Friday’s game for no more than $20 above face value.”

In fact, some of the best seats in the house are selling for less than face value on the secondary market with savings between $9 and $41 a ticket. This is just another example of the free market working for us. When fans own the tickets they purchase, the transferability of that ticket leads to a fair market price.

If this were a “paperless ticket” game, it’s hard to imagine Ticketmaster giving away tickets below face value without raking in additional fees. And the lack of transferability means many seats would go unused. Click here to read more on how actors in the secondary market are making it easier for the average fan to watch the playoffs.
